About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute seeks applicants to develop innovative technologies for cancer research and clinical care through proof-of-concept and pilot studies, with applications due November 10, 2026. Clinical trials are not permitted under this opportunity.

Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), special district governments, independent school districts, housing authorities, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, federal agencies, U.S. territories and possessions, and non-domestic entities.

The funding emphasizes early-stage projects offering high technical innovation potential to accelerate research in cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, cancer control, and epidemiology. In-scope technologies include advanced molecular and cellular analysis platforms, multi-omic and spatial profiling methods, imaging and sensing technologies, immuno-engineering approaches, and innovations in biospecimen processing, modeling, and quality assessment. Technologies may have potential for widespread applicability but must be focused on cancer applications in the proposed project.

This opportunity is part of the broader NCI-sponsored Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT) Program and falls under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394). Award mechanisms include R61 grants (clinical trials not allowed).

Evaluation prioritizes scientific merit and significance of proposed objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget justification, and relevance to program objectives.

Forecast synopsis

Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits grant applications proposing to develop innovative technologies for cancer research or clinical care. The emphasis of this NOFO is on early-stage projects proposing proof-of-concept/pilot studies to test the technical feasibility of the proposed method, tool, assay, platform, or instrument.

Well-suited applications must offer a high degree of technical innovation and the potential to accelerate and/or enhance research in the areas of cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, cancer control, and/or epidemiology. Projects that are in-scope include technologies with new or significantly improved technical capabilities to measure, analyze, model, or interrogate cancer-related systems. These may include, but are not limited to, advanced molecular and cellular analysis platforms, multi-omic and spatial profiling methods, imaging and sensing technologies, immuno-engineering approaches, and innovations in biospecimen processing, modeling, and quality assessment. Technologies proposed for development may have potential for widespread applicability but must be focused in this proposal on cancer applications.

This funding opportunity is part of a broader NCI-sponsored Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT) Program.
