About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's Office of Science (DOE SC) is soliciting research proposals under the Early Career Research Program to support the development of individual research programs for outstanding early-career scientists across seven program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR), Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Biological and Environmental Research (BER), Fusion Energy Sciences (FES), High Energy Physics (HEP), Nuclear Physics (NP), and Isotope Research and Development and Production (DOE IP). Eligible applicants must be untenured assistant or associate professors at U.S. institutions of higher education, full-time permanent employees at DOE/NNSA national laboratories, or equivalent permanent position holders at SC scientific user facilities, with Ph.D.s received within the ten-year period preceding the competition (January 1, 2015 or later for FY 2026). Applicants must submit pre-applications by March 24, 2026 at 5:00 PM ET and full applications through Grants.gov by June 2, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET. Merit review will assess scientific and technical merit, appropriateness of methodology, personnel competency and resource adequacy, budget reasonableness, data management plan appropriateness, and potential for scientific leadership. Award selections are anticipated in July 2026.
The program expects to distribute $145 million in total funding ($79 million in FY 2026 and $66 million in outyear funding) across approximately 100 awards, with expected award amounts of $875,000 over five years for higher education institutions and $2,750,000 over five years for DOE/NNSA national laboratories or SC scientific user facilities. All research will be conducted at applicant institutions, with no cost sharing required for basic and fundamental research. PIs may not have previously received an ECRP award and may submit applications in no more than three SC ECRP competitions.
Synopsis
DOE SC hereby invites applications for support under the ECRP in the following program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR); Basic Energy Sciences (BES); Biological and Environmental Research (BER); Fusion Energy Sciences (FES); High Energy Physics (HEP); Nuclear Physics (NP); Isotope Research and Development and Production (DOE IP). The purpose of this program is to support the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and to stimulate research careers in the areas supported by SC.
