About this opportunity
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living is soliciting applications for research on resilience and positive mental health outcomes among people with spinal cord injury, with an application deadline of August 5, 2026. One award of $700,000 total will fund a single research project across a 36-month period (three 12-month budget periods), with a project start date of September 30, 2026.
Eligible applicants include states, county and city/township governments, special district governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, and other entities meeting the program's eligibility requirements. No cost share or matching requirement is specified.
Research priorities require grantees to address at least one of the following: development or testing of screening methods for suicidal ideation among people with spinal cord injury, development or testing of interventions to promote positive mental health outcomes, or identification of protective factors for mental health. Applicants must conduct research at one or more stages of research methodology, with at least one research project at the intervention efficacy or scale-up evaluation stage. All proposals must include knowledge translation activities and involve people with spinal cord injury in research planning and execution. The project narrative cannot exceed 60 pages and must include a work plan, budget justification, data management plan, commitment letters, and vitae for key personnel.
Merit review will assess applications on seven criteria totaling 100 points: importance of the problem (15 points), alignment with ACL strategic priorities (5 points), design of research activities (50 points), design of dissemination activities (5 points), design of utilization activities (5 points), project staff (15 points), and adequacy and accessibility of resources (5 points).
The opportunity (HHS-2026-ACL-NIDILRR-DPHF-0225) is assigned to CFDA 93.433, and an optional notice of intent is due July 22, 2026.
