About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for Development of Animal Models and Related Biological Materials for Research (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) with a due date of January 7, 2028. The program funds innovative research to develop, improve, characterize, and preserve animal models, animal model-related biological materials, technologies, and new approach methodologies for studies relevant to human health and disease, as well as projects aimed at improving diagnosis and control of diseases that could confound animal use in biomedical research.
Proposed projects must have broad applicability to multiple NIH Institutes or Centers and must include animal models exploring multiple body systems or multiple disease categories. Applications focused on a single disease, specific area of research, or only relevant to a single NIH IC will be withdrawn as not acceptable to this NOFO.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations and small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), special district and public housing authorities, independent school districts, and other entities including Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving Institutions, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
This opportunity is funded under CFDA 93.351 (Research Infrastructure Programs). Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance of objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity relative to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives.
Synopsis
This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) encourages innovative research to develop, improve, characterize, and preserve animal models as well as animal model related biological materials, technologies, and new approach methodologies (NAMs) for studies relevant to human health and disease. This NOFO also seeks projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and control of diseases that could confound or interfere with animal use in biomedical research. The proposed project must have broad applicability to multiple NIH Institutes or Centers (ICs) to align with the NIH-wide mission of the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP). The proposed studies must include animal models and explore multiple body systems or multiple categories of diseases. Applications that develop models focused on a specific disease or area of research, or only propose studies primarily relevant to a single NIH IC, will be considered not acceptable to this NOFO and will be withdrawn.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.
