About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Materiel Command Army Contracting Command Aberdeen Proving Ground is soliciting applications for the Deployed Warfighter Protection Program to fund research on insecticides, personal protection technologies, and vector control methods protecting deployed military personnel from arthropod-borne disease pathogens, with full applications due March 17, 2027. All U.S.-based organizations—academic institutions, non-profit entities, and commercial firms—are eligible; if foreign collaborators are involved, at least 50 percent of work must be performed in the United States. No cost share is required. The award ceiling is $975,000 over three years ($325,000 per 12-month period), with period of performance not exceeding three years. Research must address at least one of five focus areas: Bite Prevention (highly prioritized), Vector Control (highly prioritized), Decision Support Tools or Software Applications, Vector Surveillance and Identification, or Vector Pathogen Diagnostics. The program will not fund applications consisting solely of basic research, vector pathogen research, clinical or diagnostic research in humans, or testing of previously EPA-registered products. Applicants follow a two-step process: pre-applications are due November 20, 2026, through eBRAP; invitations to submit full applications are expected by January 20, 2027; full applications are due March 17, 2027, through Grants.gov (extramural) or eBRAP (intramural). Evaluation criteria include research strategy and feasibility, transition plan, statistical plan, impact, background and rationale, and personnel qualifications; programmatic review assesses relevance to DWFP objectives. Awards are anticipated between September and December 2027. Research involving animals requires IACUC review and ACURO authorization; research involving human subjects requires IRB review and OHRO approval. The Assistance Listing number is 12.355.

Synopsis

The DWFP Program's mission is to protect deployed military personnel from arthropod vectors of medically relevant disease pathogens, including (but not limited to) arthropod disease vectors of tick-borne pathogens and mosquito-borne arboviruses, as well as nuisance biting arthropods and emerging arthropod threats such as the New World Screwworm fly. The DWFP Program seeks to fund original and innovative research that supports the Advanced Technology Development of new insecticides, or improved formulations of existing insecticides for vector control, new technology or enhanced modalities of personal protection from biting arthropods, or improved efficacy and sustainability of equipment for application of pesticides.
