About this opportunity

The Health Resources and Services Administration is soliciting applications for the Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Program (DFLRP) to increase the dental and dental hygiene faculty workforce by providing loan repayment assistance to accredited training programs, with an application deadline of July 8, 2026. Applicants previously funded under the 2022 or 2023 DFLRP awards are ineligible; individual dental professionals cannot apply directly.

Eligible applicants include Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited programs of general, pediatric, or public health dentistry in dental or dental hygiene schools, as well as residency or advanced education programs in these specialties. Eligible organization types include public and private institutions of higher education, federally recognized Native American tribal governments and organizations, and nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status.

HRSA anticipates distributing approximately $800,000 in total available funding across approximately eight grants. Individual award amounts range from up to $100,000 in Year 1 to $300,000 in Year 5 over a five-year period of performance from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2031. Staffing and administrative costs are capped at $10,000 for Year 1 and $5,000 annually for Years 2–5. Indirect costs cannot exceed 8% of modified total direct costs.

Recipients must develop or maintain loan repayment programs offering prescribed repayment percentages (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%) over five years of full-time faculty service. Program requirements include establishing a selection committee, developing standard operating procedures, tracking participants for one year post-program completion, and limiting participants to five total years of participation and no more than 100% total repayment.

Nine funding priorities worth up to nine additional merit review points cover collaborative projects, discipline retention, student background diversity, formal relationships with health centers, vulnerable populations, cultural competency, placement in practice settings serving medically vulnerable areas, special populations training programs, and location within dental shortage areas (worth two points). The funding opportunity is identified as HRSA-26-066 under CFDA 93.059.

Synopsis

The purpose of the Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Program is to increase the number of dental and dental hygiene faculty in the workforce by assisting dental and dental hygiene training programs to attract and retain full-time faculty through loan repayment.
