About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is seeking applicants for the "Oceans of Opportunity: U.S. Wave Energy Open Water Testing" funding opportunity announcement (FOA). This FOA supports EERE's efforts to advance the commercial readiness of wave energy technologies through open water testing and system validation at multiple scales, aligning with the Biden administration's goals for carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The FOA has three topic areas: Topic Area 1 focuses on wave energy technologies for distributed blue economy applications, Topic Area 2 aims to develop wave energy technologies for coastal and island stakeholders, and Topic Area 3 supports the maturation of grid-connected wave energy technologies.
The anticipated award values for this FOA are not specified, but the Renewable Energy Research and Development program, under which this opportunity is assigned, typically funds projects ranging from $250,000 to $10 million with durations of 1-5 years. The work is expected to be performed at recipient facilities or field sites within the United States.
Synopsis
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue, on behalf of the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled "Oceans of Opportunity: U.S. Wave Energy Open Water Testing". This FOA supports WPTO's efforts to advance the commercial readiness of wave energy technologies through open water testing and system validation at multiple scales, serving the broader goals of the Biden administration to achieve carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and to "deliver an equitable, clean energy future, and put the United States on a path to achieve net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by no later than 2050" to the benefit of all Americans. Topic Area 1 leverages wave energy technologies that provide power to distributed blue economy applications. Topic Area 2 aims to develop functional wave energy technologies for coastal and island stakeholders (may or may not be grid-connected). Topic Area 3 allows for maturing grid connected technologies that demonstrate reliable power generation direct to a utility. This notice of intent (NOI) is issued so that interested parties are aware of EERE's intention to issue this FOA in the near term. All of the information contained in this Notice is subject to change. EERE will not respond to questions concerning this NOI. Once the FOA has been released, EERE will provide an avenue for potential applicants to submit questions. Complete information, including the full Notice of Intent, can be found on the EERE Exchange website: https://eere-exchange.energy.gov/
