About this opportunity

The National Institute on Aging is soliciting applications for a Data Coordinating Center establishing the Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Brain Atlas, with an application deadline of November 10, 2026. The award will be a single cooperative agreement valued at $2.5 million over a maximum 5-year project period.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, and small businesses. Foreign organizations and foreign subawards are prohibited; unfunded international collaborations and foreign consultants are permitted. All applicants must register with SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov before submission.

The Data Coordinating Center will integrate and disseminate multiscale mouse brain datasets from the NIA's AD Multimodal Atlas Projects, leveraging the NIA-supported AD Knowledge Portal as the primary repository. Required activities include aggregating and harmonizing datasets across at least five AD-MAP projects; developing multiscale computational tools for integrating multi-omics and connectomics data types (single-cell/nucleus transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, connectivity mapping, neuropathology, epigenomics); creating an open-access web-based portal for data visualization and query; and facilitating collaborative analyses among data-contributing teams. Letters of support from participating AD-MAP project investigators are required.

The Research Strategy must address five objectives: dataset aggregation and harmonization, multiscale tool development, community portal creation, alignment with existing resources including MODEL-AD and the BRAIN Initiative, and a comprehensive evaluation plan with specific milestones. A Data Management and Sharing Plan is required. Review criteria emphasize significance to the research community, investigator qualifications and collaborative experience, innovation in coordination and management, feasibility of the technical approach, and adequacy of institutional environment and resources. The award operates as a cooperative agreement with substantial NIH programmatic involvement, requiring regular coordination meetings and milestone assessments.

Clinical trials are not permitted. The funding opportunity is designated RFA-AG-27-010 under Assistance Listing 93.866 (Aging Research).

Synopsis

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications proposing a Data Coordinating Center that integrates and disseminates multiscale mouse brain datasets for the aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) research community. The Data Coordinating Center will establish the Aging and AD Mouse Brain Atlas (AD-MBA), which will serve as a central, unified research resource for multi-omic and connectomic mouse brain datasets emerging from the NIA AD Multimodal Atlas Projects (AD-MAPs). The Data Coordinating Center will (1) leverage the NIA-supported AD Knowledge Portal data infrastructure to facilitate hosting, deposition, and dissemination of multimodal datasets generated by the AD-MAPs program, (2) facilitate collaborative analyses among the data-contributing teams, (3) develop/optimize and incorporate tools for multiscale integration of multi-omics and connectomics datasets, and (4) create a broadly accessible web-based interface for the visualization and dissemination of integrated multiscale data.

Eligibility

Refer to Section III. Eligibility Information in the NOFO for additional information on eligibility.Foreign Organizations/Foreign CollaborationsNon-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.Non-domestic (non-U.S.) components of U.S. Organizations are not eligible to apply.Foreign components, as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement, are allowed. NIH will no longer issue awards (i.e., new, renewal, or non-competing continuation) to domestic or foreign entities that involve foreign subawards/subcontracts. All NIH-funded research involving foreign subawards/subcontracts must be submitted in response to a NOFO that is specifically designated for funded international collaborations. See NIH Grants Policy Statement 16.8 Collaborative International Research Awards.Applications involving foreign subawards/subcontracts submitted in response to this NOFO will be deemed noncompliant and will not be considered for funding. This policy applies to all monetary international collaborations resulting in foreign subawards/subcontracts, however, it does not preclude unfunded international collaborations or foreign components, funding for foreign consultants, or procurement of unique equipment or supplies from foreign vendors.
