About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey is soliciting applications for a cooperative agreement to advance GeoAI-enabled automated landform mapping, expand the Landform Reference Ontology using knowledge graphs, and improve Geographic Names Information System summit feature positional accuracy using lidar-derived elevation datasets, with applications due July 5, 2026. Eligible applicants must be participating partners of the Great Lakes-Northern Forest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit; no cost share is required. One award of $29,994 is anticipated for a one-year performance period.

The cooperative agreement falls under CFDA 15.808 (U.S. Geological Survey Research and Data Collection). The technical proposal must address introduction and problem statement, clearly defined objectives with geographic scope, detailed procedures and methods, planned products and dissemination strategy, project schedule with key milestones, and references. A Data Management Plan is required, describing data types, standards for data and metadata formats, access and sharing policies, provisions for reuse and derivatives, and archiving plans. Recipients must comply with Geospatial Data Act requirements, submitting all GIS data in open formats with complete feature-level metadata to the relevant bureau or office, and must first conduct due diligence at GeoPlatform.gov to determine if required geospatial data already exists before producing new datasets.

Evaluation criteria are Purpose, Objectives, and Relevance (30 points); Technical Approach (25 points); Budget Justification and Clarity (20 points); and Qualifications, Experience, and Past Performance (25 points). The negotiated indirect cost rate is 17.5%. Recipients must submit annual progress reports within 90 days after each agreement year, a final technical report within 120 days of performance completion, and annual SF-425 Federal Financial Reports within 90 days following each annual period. Submit applications through Grants.gov using Funding Opportunity Number G26AS00133. Direct inquiries to Grant Specialist Rachel Miller at Rachel_miller@ios.doi.gov.
