About this opportunity
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is soliciting applications for continuation or competitive revision of ongoing clinical trials under a cooperative agreement mechanism with an application due date of January 6, 2028. This opportunity supports competing renewals or revisions of clinical trials already funded by NIDCR in dental, oral, and craniofacial health.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, small businesses, for-profit organizations, and a broad array of designated institutions including HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Non-domestic entities and foreign organizations are not eligible; foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed. Cost share requirements are not specified in the source material.
Awards are issued under CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research). The program funds clinical trials addressing concrete oral health challenges including mandibular fracture healing, oral cancer development, periodontal disease pathogenesis, temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis, craniofacial genetic disorders, salivary gland function, and oral microbiome dysbiosis. Recent individual awards in the program have ranged from under $100 thousand to over $700 thousand depending on investigator status and project scope.
Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, investigator competency, innovation of concepts and methodologies, technical adequacy of experimental design, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to NIDCR program objectives. Secondary review is conducted by the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council. Applications must follow NIH FORMS-I submission instructions, with research-specific requirements identified in guidance marked with yellow banners.
