About this opportunity

The National Institute on Aging is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity under the U19 activity code that will solicit applications for large-scale, complex, multidisciplinary aging research projects with multiple highly integrated components focused on a common research question; no application deadline has been announced, and notice is being provided to allow potential applicants time to develop collaborations.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other than federally recognized), county governments, city/township governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, federal agencies, U.S. territories or possessions, faith-based or community-based organizations, and regional organizations.

Applications will propose well-integrated research programs composed of multidisciplinary investigator teams within a single institution or consortium. All applications must demonstrate how individual components will synergistically integrate to advance understanding of a unifying hypothesis or theme, with a high level of coordination among components ensuring integration across projects. The research must address biomedical, social, or behavioral questions relevant to aging.

Evaluation will assess scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of design and approach, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity in relation to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives. Cooperative agreement awards typically run up to five years. The funding operates under Assistance Listing 93.866 (Aging Research). No specific award ceiling, floor, or expected number of awards is listed in this forecast notice.

Forecast synopsis

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) that invites applications that propose large-scale, complex research projects with multiple highly integrated components focused on a common research question relevant to aging. Applications will involve a well-integrated research program composed of a multidisciplinary team of investigators within a single institution or a consortium of institutions. Applications will demonstrate how the individual components will be synergistically integrated to advance understanding of the unifying hypothesis or theme. The structure and approach of proposed projects will vary depending on the hypotheses under investigation; however, all applications are expected to reflect a high level of coordination among components that ensures integration across the projects.

Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO intends to utilize the U19 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights into this area of aging research are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO.
