About this opportunity

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is soliciting applications for Community-Partnered Nursing Research Centers (P20 Clinical Trial Optional) with an application due date of May 7, 2028.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), city, county, and township governments, tribal governments and tribal organizations, state governments, special district governments, independent school districts, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, and other entities. Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities are eligible. Faith-based or community-based organizations and regional organizations may apply. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

The initiative funds nursing-led research centers that establish centralized research resources within Schools or Colleges of Nursing, build community-partnered research expertise, and develop interdisciplinary nurse-led research teams that partner with communities in developing, implementing, and evaluating research addressing persistent health challenges. Centers must apply NINR's research lenses through pilot research and meaningfully engage community partners throughout all activities.

Applications are evaluated on the significance of proposed research, approach, innovation, investigators, environment, and alignment with NIH and Administration priorities. Peer review includes dual scientific review by non-NIH scientists, followed by evaluation by a scientific peer review panel and national advisory council.

The opportunity is assigned to the Nursing Research program (CFDA 93.361), administered by the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health.

Synopsis

The purpose of this initiative is to support the development of innovative research centers to foster nursing-led programs that promote community-partnered research to address persistent health challenges. Center applications developed in response to this RFA should propose strategies to strengthen the research infrastructure by establishing or expanding centralized research resources in School or College of Nursing (SON/CON), developing and enhancing nurse-led interdisciplinary teams, and building expertise in community-partnered research through conducting pilot research that applies NINR's research lenses. Center strategies should be informed by NINRs mission and should meaningfully engage the community throughout all activities.
