About this opportunity

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to solicit applications for the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD), a multidisciplinary research consortium supporting coordinated basic, clinical, translational, diagnostic, intervention, and prevention research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders—lifelong physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments associated with prenatal alcohol exposure.

Eligible applicants include independent school districts, nonprofits (both 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), higher education institutions (public and private), housing authorities, special district governments, for-profit organizations, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories and possessions, and eligible federal agencies.

CIFASD supports collaborative research addressing high-priority needs including improved early identification and diagnosis of FASD; development and validation of interventions; mechanistic and translational studies of prenatal alcohol exposure and alcohol teratogenesis; and approaches to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD incidence. Projects must demonstrate integration with the broader CIFASD consortium through multidisciplinary expertise, shared resources, and coordinated data and research activities. The funding instrument is a grant; applications will be evaluated on scientific and technical merit, program balance, and relevance to NIAAA priorities and public health issues. Assistance Listing 93.273 (Alcohol Research Programs) administers the award. The NIAAA processes most applications within 240 to 270 days of submission; research project grants typically support work for up to 5 years. A NOFO publication date has not been announced.

Forecast synopsis

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications to continue the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD). CIFASD is a multidisciplinary research consortium supporting coordinated basic, clinical, translational, diagnostic, intervention, and prevention research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), a set of lifelong physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. The anticipated NOFO is expected to support collaborative research addressing high-priority needs in the FASD field, including improved early identification and diagnosis; development and validation of interventions; mechanistic and translational studies of prenatal alcohol exposure and alcohol teratogenesis; and approaches to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and the incidence of FASD. Projects are expected to demonstrate integration with the broader CIFASD consortium through multidisciplinary expertise, shared resources, and coordinated data and research activities.
