About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is forecasting applications to create a national network of Children's Environmental Health Research Translation Centers (CEHRT) that will develop and test scientific questions, public health interventions, and strategies to translate children's environmental health research findings into actionable community practice, with no published application deadline in this forecast notice.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), small businesses, for-profit organizations, independent school districts, regional organizations, faith-based and community-based organizations, U.S. territories and possessions, and eligible federal agencies. The Centers will serve as national leaders in translational children's environmental health research and research methodology development, with emphasis on mentoring new investigators and supporting response efforts to emerging environmental exposures affecting children.

The program operates under CFDA 93.113 (Environmental Health) administered by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Evaluation will assess scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity relative to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives. Dual review occurs first through study section peer review for scientific merit, followed by National Advisory Council secondary review. The Director, NIEHS, makes final funding decisions.

This is a forecast notice; specific award ceiling, award floor, expected number of awards, period of performance, cost share requirements, and application deadline are not yet published. Applicants should monitor for the full NOFO release.

Forecast synopsis

The overall goal of this NOFO is to solicit applications to create a national network of Children's Environmental Health Research Translation Centers (CEHRT). Through external collaboration with the children's environmental health community, the Centers will protect and improve children's health by developing and testing new scientific questions and public health interventions/strategies with an eye towards translation; and mentoring a pipeline of new investigators interested in translational Children's Environmental Health (CEH). The CEHRT Centers will serve as national leaders in CEH translational research and research methodology development, with a focus on creating actionable steps to move evidence-informed biomedical children's environmental health research findings to the wider community of practice to protect children from harm and to ensure a healthy future. The CEHRT program will also serve as a national research resource to support response efforts to emerging environmental exposures affecting children.
