About this opportunity

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking applications to establish Coccidioidomycosis Collaborative Research Centers (CCRCs) dedicated to conducting translational and clinical research to advance Valley fever vaccine development. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, and tribal governments, with the requirement that each center establish a mandatory Administrative Core, at least two Research Projects (maximum four) organized around a common theme, and optionally include up to two additional Cores for shared services. Applicants must ensure at least one Research Project involves clinical research utilizing Valley fever patient samples from endemic regions, and each CCRC must implement a Development and Research Program supporting early-stage investigators with up to $80,000 annually. Proposals will be evaluated on scientific merit, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to NIAID's Valley fever vaccine strategic objectives. Applications must be submitted by July 9, 2026, and must comply with Multi-Project instructions including specific page limitations of 12 pages overall, 6 pages for Administrative Core and optional Cores, and 12 pages per Research Project; applicant organizations must complete registrations in SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov prior to submission.

The program will distribute approximately $4.8 million in FY 2027 across 3-4 awards, with individual awards not exceeding $1.2 million in direct costs annually over a five-year project period, with the earliest start date of July 9, 2026. Research must be conducted at eligible domestic institutions located throughout endemic regions of the United States that have unique research resources and patient populations for Valley fever study. Applicants are limited to one application per institution, and clinical trials are not permitted under this funding opportunity.

Synopsis

The purpose of the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to solicit applications for a Coccidioidomycosis Collaborative Research Centers (CCRC) program. This new initiative will establish highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, research teams to conduct translational and clinical research to support the development of a Valley fever vaccine as outlined in NIAID's Strategic Plan for Research to Develop a Valley fever Vaccine.
