About this opportunity
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks applicants for a Clinical Research Network on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) cooperative agreement with an application deadline of November 10, 2026; NIAID intends to commit $18 million in FY 2027 to fund one award with a seven-year project period and maximum annual direct costs of $12 million.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, Indian tribal governments, and faith-based organizations. Non-domestic entities and foreign subawards or subcontracts are ineligible; foreign components and unfunded international collaborations are allowed.
The CRN comprises four integrated centers: a Scientific Leadership Center (SLC) providing administrative oversight and governance, a Clinical Operations Center (COC) managing clinical studies and trial implementation, a Laboratory Center (LC) providing laboratory services and specimen management, and a Statistics and Data Coordination Center (SDCC) providing biostatistical and data coordination support. Applications must include clinical trials as a required component and specify detailed research strategy subsections for each center (SLC and COC: 30 pages each; LC and SDCC: 12 pages each), a Data Management and Sharing Plan, and human subjects research documentation.
The research agenda must prioritize clinical evaluation of novel antimicrobial treatments, drug combinations, and diagnostic tests; strategy trials optimizing licensed antimicrobials; and training for next-generation AMR researchers, with particular emphasis on difficult-to-treat gram-negative bacterial infections and antifungal-resistant pathogens. The earliest scientific review date is March 2027; advisory council review is scheduled for May 2027. Award administration includes substantial NIH programmatic involvement, monitoring trial progress, developing regulatory documents, providing medical monitoring, and establishing an External Advisory Board post-award.
The funding opportunity is issued under Assistance Listing 93.855 (Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research) and RFA-AI-27-005.
Synopsis
The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to support a Clinical Research Network (CRN) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). The program aims to design, implement, and manage clinical research that addresses pivotal clinical questions related to AMR through a coordinated and integrated CRN. The CRN will comprise four centers: the Scientific Leadership Center (SLC), the Clinical Operations Center (COC), the Laboratory Center (LC), and the Statistics and Data Coordination Center (SDCC).
