About this opportunity
Paragraph 1:
The Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking applications for the FY 2025 CHIPS AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials and Processes (CARISSMA) Competition. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aims to support industry-informed, university-based artificial intelligence-powered autonomous experimentation (AI/AE) collaborations focused on sustainable semiconductor materials and processes. The objective is to accelerate the discovery, design, synthesis, and adoption of new materials and processes, as well as develop the workforce needed to meet the industry's technology, economic, and sustainability goals. Eligible applicants include domestic accredited institutions of higher education and domestic non-profit or for-profit organizations that manage consortia of accredited institutions. Concept papers are due by January 13, 2025, and full applications will be by invitation only.
Paragraph 2:
NIST anticipates making multiple awards ranging from $20-$40 million each, with a 5-year period of performance. The total available federal funding is approximately $100 million, and the NOFO is funded through the CHIPS Research and Development program (CFDA 11.042) at NIST.

NOFO updated on November 20, 2024, to correct an erroneous hyperlink to "Frequently Asked Questions" located on pages 5, 75 and 92. The hyperlinked text now has the correct URL: https://www.nist.gov/chips/frequently-asked-questions-carissma-nofo. No other changes were made to the NOFO dated October 30, 2024. -
Subject to the availability of funds, this NOFO seeks applications for industry-informed, university-based artificial intelligence-powered autonomous experimentation (AI/AE) collaborations, including research and development, education and workforce development, and related activities relevant to sustainable semiconductor materials and processes. If successful, awards made under this NOFO will support the long-term viability of next-generation domestic semiconductor manufacturing, accelerating the discovery, design, synthesis, and adoption of materials and processes, and the development of new researchers needed to meet the industry's technology, economic, and sustainability goals.
