About this opportunity

The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program is seeking applicants to install electric vehicle charging stations and other alternative fueling stations in publicly accessible locations. State governments, tribal governments, public housing authorities, special district governments, counties, cities, and public higher education institutions may apply for funding to strategically deploy infrastructure for electric, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas vehicles. Applicants must demonstrate how their proposed projects will help achieve program objectives to expand accessible, sustainable infrastructure and support designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. Applications are due by June 13, 2023 and will be evaluated based on selection criteria outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.

Through this program, $700 million is available from the 2022 and 2023 fiscal year budgets to fund projects. Awards will support installation and operation of fueling and charging infrastructure in both urban and rural settings across designated Alternative Fuel Corridors as well as locations where people live and work nationwide to make modern and sustainable infrastructure accessible to all drivers of electric, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas vehicles.

The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program (CFI Program) is a new competitive grant program created by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to strategically deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in the places people live and work, urban and rural areas alike, in addition to along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). CFI Program investments will make modern and sustainable infrastructure accessible to all drivers of electric, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas vehicles. This program provides two funding categories of grants: (1) Community Charging and Fueling Grants (Community Program); and (2) Alternative Fuel Corridor Grants (Corridor Program). The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides $2.5 billion over five years for this program. This first round of funding makes $700 million from Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023 funding available to strategically deploy electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and other fueling infrastructure projects in urban and rural communities in publicly accessible locations, including downtown areas and local neighborhoods, particularly in underserved and disadvantaged communities.

The Government intends to make multiple grant awards under this NOFO.
