About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health seeks applications for basic research on chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and pesticides with primary or secondary effects on the nervous system, with applications due October 16, 2026. Clinical trials are not eligible under this mechanism.
Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, non-profits, higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), Indian/Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, TCCUs, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
The source does not specify cost-share requirements, award floor, award ceiling, expected number of awards, period of performance, or place of performance. Projects supported are expected to generate data elucidating mechanisms of toxicity, possible new manifestations of toxic exposures, and potential therapeutic targets for chemical threats that could be deployed in terrorist attacks or released accidentally from industrial production, storage, or shipping.
Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and general significance of the proposed study and its objectives; technical adequacy of experimental design and approach; competency of the proposed investigator or group; adequacy of available and proposed facilities and resources; necessity of budget components in relation to the proposed project; and relevance and importance to announced program objectives.
The opportunity is funded under two Assistance Listings: Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research (CFDA 93.855) and Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853).
Synopsis
This announcement invites applications for basic research projects on chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and pesticides that have primary or secondary effects on the nervous system. Chemical threats are toxic compounds that could be used in a terrorist attack or accidentally released from industrial production, storage, or shipping. Projects supported by this NOFO are expected to generate data that elucidate mechanisms of toxicity of these agents, possible new manifestations of toxic exposures, and potential new targets for therapeutic development.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession; Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations) are not eligible to apply.
