About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for the Catalyze: Product Definition for Small Molecules, Biologics and Combination Products initiative to advance early-stage translational research on therapeutic and diagnostic candidates for heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders, with applications due December 23, 2027. Clinical trials are not permitted under this R61/R33 mechanism.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized), tribal organizations (not federally recognized), special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, and Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible; however, non-domestic components of U.S. organizations and foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed.
The program provides early-stage translational support for target identification and validation activities and preliminary product or lead series identification to characterize potential therapeutic candidates and combination products treating HLBS diseases and disorders. A companion initiative supports devices and diagnostics. The Catalyze initiative is part of a broader suite of innovation grants designed to advance projects toward entry criteria for the NHLBI Catalyze Preclinical Program.
NIAID was added as a participating organization effective for due dates on or after June 18, 2026 per NOT-AI-26-003, with updates to Sections I, IV, VI, and VII of the announcement. Funding flows through Lung Diseases Research (CFDA 93.838), Cardiovascular Diseases Research (CFDA 93.837), Blood Diseases and Resources Research (CFDA 93.839), and National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (CFDA 93.233) programs. The source does not specify award ceiling, award floor, expected number of awards, period of performance, or cost-share requirements.

Update #2 · Latest ·
The goal of the NHLBI Catalyze Program is to provide a comprehensive suite of support and services to facilitate the transition of basic science discoveries into viable diagnostic and therapeutic candidates that have been cleared for human testing, and to develop translational researchers fluent in product development and entrepreneurship. This specific Catalyze Product Definition initiative will provide the early stage translational supportneeded for the activities required to identify and characterize potential therapeutic candidates and combination products to treat HLBS diseases and disorders. This initiative has a companion initiative that supports development of devices and diagnostics and is also part of a suite of innovation grants to advance projects to the point where they can meet the entry criteria for the NHLBI Catalyze Preclinical Program.
