About this opportunity
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) seeks applicants for a Career Transition Award (K22) supporting NINDS intramural neurologists and neurosurgeon-scientists, with an application due date of November 12, 2027. This opportunity is restricted to individuals holding NINDS intramural appointments who are transitioning to independent academic faculty positions.
The program operates through a two-phase structure: an initial period of NIH intramural appointment followed by support at an extramural institution. Award recipients must be clinician-scientists pursuing both independently funded scientific research and clinical activities.
Eligible applicant types include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), small businesses, and other organizational categories. Eligible institutions also include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Hispanic-serving institutions, HBCUs, AANAPISIs, and tribally controlled colleges and universities. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) organizations and foreign components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.
The opportunity is listed under CFDA 93.853, Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders. Applications will be reviewed for scientific merit, investigator competency, technical adequacy of experimental design, facility adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Applicants must follow Career Development-specific application instructions in addition to standard NIH forms guidance.
