About this opportunity

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is soliciting applications for the Career Transition Award (K22) for intramural clinician-scientists with an application due date of November 12, 2027. This award specifically targets NINDS intramural neurologists and neurosurgeon-scientists and does not permit clinical trial activity.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), state and local governments, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), independent school districts, for-profit organizations, and other entity types. Eligible Applicants also include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, and U.S. territories and possessions. Non-domestic entities and foreign components are not eligible.

The K22 provides support through a two-phase program: an initial period of intramural appointment at NIH followed by a final period of support at an extramural institution. The objective is to develop investigator independence and enable clinician-scientists to pursue independently funded research while maintaining clinical activities.

Applications are reviewed on scientific merit and general significance of proposed research, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity relative to proposed work, and relevance to program objectives. Peer review is conducted by technical panels and the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council.

The award is funded under CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders). Applicants must use Career Development-specific application instructions in addition to general forms guidance.
