About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute invites applications to the Carcinogen Hazard Assessment Monographs Program (CHAMP) to critically and systematically evaluate scientific evidence on carcinogenic hazards to humans, with applications due February 9, 2027. This is a single-award opportunity with a funding ceiling of $800,000 total ($700,000 annual maximum in direct costs) and an earliest start date of February 9, 2027.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), federal agencies, U.S. territories, regional organizations, and foreign organizations. Foreign subawards and foreign components of U.S. organizations are prohibited. No cost share is required.
The funded program will convene five to seven working groups of expert scientists to assess global carcinogenic risks, prioritize agents for evaluation (including chemicals, physical agents, biological organisms, behaviors, lifestyle factors, and occupational exposures), and produce high-quality monographs serving as authoritative references for health agencies and the scientific community worldwide. The project period is five years.
NCI explicitly prohibits clinical trials and primary data collection. Applications are evaluated on three scored factors: significance and innovation of the proposed monographs program; rigor and feasibility of the approach to evaluate carcinogenic hazards; and expertise and resources of leadership and institutional environment. All applications receive peer review by scientific authorities followed by review by the National Cancer Advisory Board.
The program is supported through CFDA 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research), 93.399 (Cancer Control), and 93.396 (Cancer Biology Research). Applicants must register with SAM.gov, obtain a unique entity identifier, establish eRA Commons accounts, and register with ORCID before submission.
