About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Lab is seeking stakeholder input on the Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) initiative through a Request for Information (RFI). The goal is to obtain perspectives on the CarbonSAFE initiative's objectives and the design of DE-FOA-0002711 in order to better achieve the vision of supporting rapid deployment of carbon storage to enable the decarbonization of the U.S. economy. The RFI asks for feedback on successful aspects of the initiative as well as potential modifications or improvements, with a focus on the deployment of carbon storage, achievement of storage targets, geographic and geologic coverage, project size requirements, funding allocation, and community engagement. Responses are due by January 6, 2025 and should be no more than 15 pages.
The CarbonSAFE initiative is funded through the $2.5 billion allocation for Carbon Storage Validation and Testing under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The RFI aims to evaluate the success of CarbonSAFE in accelerating carbon storage deployment and meeting DOE's goals of enabling 65 million metric tons of CO2 injection per year by 2030 and 100 million metric tons by 2035. Projects are currently underway or in negotiation across multiple phases of the program, with a focus on large-scale storage complexes handling 50+ million metric tons of CO2 over 30 years.
