About this opportunity

The Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory is seeking applications for the Carbon Negative Shot Pilots funding opportunity. This cooperative agreement aims to expand the current portfolio of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, including biomass carbon removal and storage, enhanced mineralization, ocean-based CDR, and direct air capture, to advance solutions that can achieve a cost target of under $100 per net ton of carbon dioxide equivalent removed by 2032. Eligible applicant types are unrestricted, and proposals will be evaluated on factors such as the technology readiness level, anticipated performance, and the proposed test plan. The application deadline is April 16, 2024, with award selections expected in August 2024.

The available funding for this opportunity is expected to vary by the four Areas of Interest, with the number and size of awards also varying accordingly. Successful projects will test integrated pilot-scale systems that capture at least 1,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually for biomass and mineralization projects, and 500 hours of continuous operation. The funded projects will take place at the recipients' own facilities or at other suitable locations.
