About this opportunity
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) seeks applicants for Building Communities of Recovery grants supporting organizations that mobilize and connect community resources to increase access to long-term recovery support for people with substance use disorders and co-occurring substance use and mental disorders, with a hard deadline of July 16, 2026. SAMHSA will accept and review only the first 70 complete, successfully submitted, and high-quality applications received via eRA; once this threshold is met, the submission portal will close and no further applications will be considered.
Eligible applicants are Single State Agencies for substance use, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories (Guam, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Republic of Palau), local government, federally recognized tribes and tribal organizations, state administrative agencies, service providers, community and nonprofit organizations, universities and colleges, research institutions, and training and technical assistance providers.
The program operates under CFDA 93.490 (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Projects of Regional and National Significance) and advances five strategic objectives: expanding access to substance use disorder treatment, improving treatment service quality, supporting recovery-oriented systems of care, addressing the opioid and overdose crisis, and strengthening the treatment workforce. Award amounts, period of performance, and specific evaluation criteria are determined as part of the Notice of Funding Opportunity. Applications undergo merit review and require CSAT National Advisory Council concurrence. Grant recipients must retain records for three years and beyond if final audit has not been completed or findings resolved.
