About this opportunity

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in coordination with other NIH Institutes and Centers, forecasts publication of a notice of funding opportunity to solicit cooperative agreement applications for the BRAIN Initiative Cell Atlas Network (BICAN) Coordinating Unit for Biostatistics, Informatics, and Engagement (CUBIE), with applications expected to be peer-reviewed under standard NIH processes. This is a renewal funding a 2-year period; no application deadline is currently specified. Applications are not solicited at this time; this notice permits eligible applicants to develop meaningful collaborations in advance of the NOFO.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, public and private higher education institutions, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, independent school districts, city and county governments, special district governments, for-profit organizations, small businesses, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories or possessions, and eligible federal agencies including the NIH Intramural Program.

CUBIE's goals are to enable exploration of large-scale brain cell atlas data and knowledge to inspire research in brain function and disorders, and to ensure research rigor and data reproducibility by making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) with transparent processes. Applications must collaborate with the broader research community to analyze and interpret all existing brain cell census and atlas data, enhance statistical power, ensure reproducibility, and foster a brain cell atlas ecosystem by leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning advancements.

Awards fall under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants). NIH standard evaluation considers technical merit through peer review, availability of funds, and relevance to program priorities, with applications competing on scientific and technical merit and program balance.
