About this opportunity

The Bureau of Justice Assistance is soliciting applications to fund state, local, and tribal investigations and prosecutions of sexual assaults in confinement facilities, with applications due September 23, 2026 in Grants.gov (SF-424) and full submissions due September 30, 2026 in JustGrants.

Eligible applicants are state governments, county governments, city or township governments, federally recognized and non-federally recognized Native American tribal governments, state and local prosecuting agencies, other units of local government, and publicly funded law enforcement agencies. No cost-sharing requirement applies.

The program distributes approximately $7 million across an anticipated four awards of up to $2 million each for a 48-month period beginning October 1, 2026. Applicants may submit only one application, though entities may serve as subrecipients in multiple applications.

Permissible uses include establishing or enhancing prosecution units, supporting evidence collection and victim and witness interviewing, providing training for law enforcement and prosecutors, establishing multidisciplinary sexual assault response teams, acquiring investigative equipment such as security cameras, and developing coordinated interagency responses. The proposal narrative is limited to 10 pages and must address need assessment, project goals and objectives, project design and implementation, and organizational capabilities. Applications must include a detailed budget with cost calculations and memoranda of understanding from project partners.

The program prioritizes projects supporting law enforcement operations, combatting violent crime, protecting children, supporting crime victims, and those coordinated with federal efforts through 287(g) partnerships or Homeland Security Task Forces.

This opportunity falls under CFDA 16.735, the PREA Program: Strategic Support for PREA Implementation.
