About this opportunity

The BJA FY25 Veterans Treatment Court Discretionary Grant Program, administered by the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance, seeks to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and federally recognized Indian tribal governments in planning, implementing, and enhancing the operations of veterans treatment courts (VTCs). The program aims to effectively integrate evidence-based substance use disorder treatment, mental health disorder treatment, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and recovery support services within judicially supervised criminal court settings for justice-involved veterans. The key objectives are to reduce recidivism, increase access to treatment and recovery support, and prevent overdose. Eligible applicants include a range of government and non-profit entities, and the deadline for submissions is April 17, 2025.

The program typically awards grants ranging from approximately $200,000 to $2,500,000 with 4-year performance periods. Funding can be used for hiring court coordinators, expanding treatment services, implementing peer support programs, improving assessment tools, and providing comprehensive support for justice-involved veterans, including case management, substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, drug testing, and recovery support services.

Synopsis

This funding opportunity seeks to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and federally recognized Indian tribal governments to plan, implement, and enhance the operations of veterans treatment courts (VTC) including service coordination, fidelity to the VTC model, and recovery support services. VTCs effectively integrate evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment; mental health disorder (MHD) treatment; treatment for co-occurring disorders, including those with a history of violence; and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of their military service. VTCs integrate mandatory drug testing, incentives and sanctions, and transitional services in judicially supervised criminal court settings that have jurisdiction over veterans with treatment needs in order to reduce recidivism, increase access to treatment and recovery support, and prevent overdose. Please see the Eligible Applicants section for the eligibility criteria.
