About this opportunity
The Bureau of Justice Assistance, under the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, is seeking applications to fund public safety initiatives that reduce deaths and injuries among individuals with dementia or developmental disabilities who wander from safe environments. The program prioritizes the procurement of tracking technology (including GPS and radio frequency devices) and the development of comprehensive wandering prevention, intervention, and rescue programs that emphasize person-centered approaches minimizing restrictive interventions. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments, higher education institutions, and other public safety organizations. The application will be evaluated based on eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic and budget reviews, and organizational risk assessment, with final award decisions made by the Assistant Attorney General. The application deadline is February 20, 2026, with project start dates on or after October 1, 2025.
Recent award values have ranged from approximately $15,620 to $150,000, with the majority of awards in the $140,000 to $150,000 range, supporting project periods of two to three years (up to 36 months maximum). Funded activities include purchasing and distributing tracking devices, conducting law enforcement and caregiver training programs, establishing registries and notification systems, and implementing community outreach campaigns. Projects may be performed across all state, local, territorial, and tribal jurisdictions in the United States, with successful applicants required to retain all award-related records for three years from submission of the final expenditure report and subject to audit by federal and independent auditors.
Synopsis
This funding opportunity seeks to support public safety efforts to reduce deaths and injuries of people living with forms of dementia or developmental disabilities who wander from safe places. The grant program will fund the purchase of tracking technology used to find vulnerable missing persons. It also funds wandering prevention, intervention, and rescue programs. The goal of this grant program is to reduce deaths and injuries with solutions that minimize restrictive interventions, provide a direct link to individuals and families, and impose limits only when essential for a person's safety and well-being. Please see the Eligible Applicants section for the eligibility criteria.
