About this opportunity

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) within the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs is seeking cooperative agreement applicants to develop and deliver educational courses for new correctional staff on the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Standards. The goal is to provide new correctional staff an understanding of how to prevent, detect, and respond to allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment of people in confinement settings. The selected recipient will create a high-quality base training curriculum that agencies can customize and use for ongoing training refreshers as needed. Key requirements include expertise in PREA implementation and adult learning principles. The applications will be evaluated based on the quality and comprehensiveness of the proposed training curriculum and delivery approach.

Recent federal grant awards under the PREA Program: Strategic Support for PREA Implementation have ranged from approximately $15,000 to $4.5 million, with most in the $50,000 to $500,000 range and typical performance periods of 1-4 years. The services will be performed at correctional facilities across the United States to support PREA compliance efforts nationwide.

Synopsis

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Training Curriculum for New Corrections Staff will identify a cooperative agreement recipient to develop and deliver educational courses to provide new correctional staff an understanding of their requirements under the PREA Standards about how to prevent, detect, and respond to allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment of people in confinement settings. This program will provide a high quality base training for agencies to customize from which portions (e.g., modules) can be used for training refreshers as needed.
