About this opportunity

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) within the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs is seeking applications from eligible state governments for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program funding to support criminal justice initiatives across nine statutorily designated program areas. Eligible uses of funds include personnel hiring, equipment purchases, supplies, contractual support, training, and information systems for law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education; corrections and community corrections; drug treatment and enforcement; planning and technology improvement; crime victim and witness services; mental health programs and crisis intervention teams; and implementation of specialized court proceedings such as mental health courts, drug courts, and veterans courts. Applications will be evaluated using a comprehensive review process that includes eligibility and responsiveness assessment, merit review, programmatic evaluation, budget analysis, and risk evaluation as specified in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. The application deadline is April 7, 2026, with the posting date of March 13, 2026.

Award decisions will be made by the Assistant Attorney General, and successful applicants will receive notification through the JustGrants system with official award package details including funding amounts and performance periods. Typical grant awards under this formula program have ranged substantially based on state allocations and project scope, with performance periods generally extending two to three years. The grant funds performance and operations at the state level, with the expectation that states will administer and distribute resources to support criminal justice improvements within their jurisdictions. All records related to the award must be retained for three years from the date of final expenditure report submission, and recipients are subject to audit requirements under 2 CFR 200 Subpart F. Authorized representatives must accept or decline awards within 45 days of notification.
