About this opportunity

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), a division of the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, is soliciting applications from state governments to fund the creation or enhancement of state crisis intervention court proceedings and related programs. Eligible funding activities include the establishment or expansion of extreme risk protection order (ERPO) programs, mental health courts, drug courts, and veterans treatment courts, as well as supporting infrastructure such as personnel hiring, equipment purchases, contractual support, training, and information systems. Applicants must demonstrate how their proposed initiatives will improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, prevent and reduce crime, and address mental health and crisis intervention needs within their jurisdictions. The review process will evaluate submissions based on eligibility and responsiveness, merit, programmatic considerations, budget adequacy, and organizational risk factors as detailed in the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO). Applications must be submitted by May 12, 2026, with all final award decisions made by the Assistant Attorney General.

Historic award amounts under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program have ranged from approximately $14,000 to $374,557 for formula and project grants, with typical performance periods of two to three years. Grant funds will support activities conducted at the state level, with implementation occurring within individual state jurisdictions and their local criminal justice systems. Selected applicants must accept or decline their awards within 45 days of notification, and all awardees must maintain records for three years from the date of final expenditure report submission for federal examination and audit purposes.
