About this opportunity

This Notice of Intent from the Department of Energy seeks applications for projects supporting two primary areas: engineering-scale testing of electrochemical systems to convert carbon dioxide into value-added chemical products worth over $1 per kilogram, and feasibility studies examining retrofitting existing petroleum refineries and petrochemical facilities for carbon conversion. Eligible entities may propose 24-month electrochemical projects requiring a 20% cost share or 18-month refinery retrofitting studies also requiring a 20% cost share. Awards will be made on a rolling basis subject to availability of funds under funding opportunity number DE-FOA-0003122 to advance the goals of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Clean Fuels & Products Shot.

Funding is provided by the Fossil Energy Research and Development program's Carbon Utilization initiative which aims to develop commercially viable products derived from anthropogenic carbon oxides and demonstrating significant net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. There is no stated expected award amount, however, projects will focus on engineering-scale testing of electrochemical conversion systems and feasibility studies examining retrofitting existing petroleum refineries and petrochemical facilities to support carbon conversion.
