About this opportunity
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is soliciting applications for Biomedical Technology Optimization and Dissemination (BTOD) Centers to support late-stage technology optimization and dissemination to the biomedical research community, with rolling application cycles concluding January 29, 2029. A BTOD Center may not exceed 15 total years of funding, including prior P41 BTRR and BTDD Center support, which functions as a hard cap on center life.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal organizations, and faith-based entities. Foreign organizations and foreign subawards are not eligible. Applicants must be within NIGMS mission areas; consultation with NIGMS staff at least eight weeks before the application due date is strongly encouraged.
The maximum award is $850,000 annual direct cost excluding equipment and consortium F&A costs, with a five-year project period. Equipment requests may exceed this ceiling if well justified. NIGMS will fund based on scientific merit, program relevance, portfolio balance, and geographic distribution, with priority accorded to technology areas not already supported in current NIGMS-funded Centers.
BTOD Centers comprise three integrated components: Technology Optimization Projects (maximum three), Driving Biomedical Projects (maximum ten, externally funded research serving as test beds), and Community Engagement activities. Each TOP must link with at least one DBP. Required administrative elements include organizational structure, center operating procedures, an External Advisory Committee with annual meetings, technology dissemination plans, resiliency plans for key personnel transitions, and a Data Management and Sharing Plan. Renewal and existing center applications must include the most recent External Advisory Committee report.
The Assistance Listing is 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training). Application cycles occur January 28, 2027; May 28, 2027; January 28, 2028; May 26, 2028; and January 29, 2029.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages applications for NIGMS Biomedical Technology Optimization and Dissemination (BTOD) Centers to support late-stage technology optimization and sustainable dissemination of the technologies to the wider biomedical research community. A BTOD Center should be at the leading edge of its field with respect to both technology optimization and engagement with relevant research communities.BTOD projects must address biomedical research areas within the NIGMS mission. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with NIGMS staff about adherence of their proposed research strategy to the Institute's goals and mission and its responsiveness to this NOFO.
