About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for basic research investigating the biological and genetic causes of cancer health disparities, with applications due January 7, 2028 under PAR-25-243. Clinical trials are not permitted under this solicitation.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), state and local governments, special district governments, Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, for-profit organizations, and other entities. Additional eligible applicants include HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISIs, tribal colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.
The program funds mechanistic studies of biological factors associated with cancer disparities; development and testing of new methodologies and models; and secondary data analyses. Research objectives include investigating biological and genetic bases of cancer disparities, including basic research in cancer biology and cancer prevention strategies, and expanding a nationwide cohort of scientists with expertise in cancer health disparities research to grow available resources such as biospecimens, patient-derived models, and research methods.
Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Applications undergo peer review for scientific and technical merit and must receive approval from a scientific review group and the National Cancer Advisory Board before competing for available funds on the basis of merit, program relevance, and program balance.
This opportunity falls under CFDA 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research). Typical R01 grants in this program range from $500 thousand to $800 thousand annually, though award amounts vary based on project scope.
Synopsis
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages grant applications from investigators interested in conducting basic, mechanistic research into the biological/genetic causes of cancer health disparities. These research project grants will support innovative studies designed to investigate biological/genetic bases of cancer disparities, such as (1) mechanistic studies of biological factors associated with cancer disparities, including those related to basic research in cancer biology or cancer prevention strategies, (2) the development and testing of new methodologies and models, and (3) secondary data analyses. This NOFO is also designed to aid and facilitate the growth of a nationwide cohort of scientists with a high level of basic research expertise in cancer health disparities research who can expand available resources and tools, such as biospecimens, patient derived models, and methods that are necessary to conduct basic research in cancer health disparities.
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
