About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is soliciting applications from individual faculty members at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for grants supporting exceptional humanities research projects in American history and culture or Western civilization. Eligible applicants must be full-time, part-time, adjunct, or retired faculty or staff members at accredited HBCUs who are U.S. citizens or foreign nationals with at least three years of U.S. residency prior to the application deadline of April 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Projects must demonstrate intellectual significance, rigorous analysis, and clear writing, with applications evaluated based on intellectual merit, project quality and organization, feasibility of the work plan, applicant qualifications as a researcher, and likelihood of successful project completion and dissemination. Required application materials include a three-page narrative, one-page work plan, one-page bibliography, two-page resume, and supporting documentation submitted through Grants.gov, with letters of reference due June 4, 2026. No cost sharing or matching funds are required, and applicants cannot hold another NEH individual award in the same federal fiscal year.

Approximately five grants totaling $300,000 in FY 2027 funding will be awarded, with individual grants ranging from $30,000 to $60,000 based on a stipend rate of $5,000 per month for full-time work, prorated for part-time arrangements. Projects must have a period of performance between two and twelve months on a full-time equivalent basis, with start dates between April 1, 2027, and September 1, 2028. Award announcements are anticipated in January 2027, and recipients must submit final performance reports within 120 calendar days after project completion.

Synopsis

NEH Awards for Faculty are grants to individual faculty members at HBCUs pursuing projects that embody exceptional humanistic research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. Applications must clearly articulate a project's value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. These awards provide recipients with time to write, to travel, and to conduct research and other project-related activities. Projects are eligible at any stage. This program offers applicants flexibility in project outcomes and award periods. The 2026 Awards for Faculty competition will accept only projects for research in American history and culture and Western civilization.
