About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science (SC) Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program is seeking research grant applications for Atmospheric System Research (ASR). This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits observational, data analysis, and/or modeling studies that use BER-supported Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility observations to improve understanding and model representation of atmospheric processes. The key research areas are: 1) Atmospheric processes from ARM's Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) and 2) High latitude and Southern Ocean atmospheric processes. Applicants must be domestic institutions, except DOE/NNSA National Laboratories and certain nonprofit organizations. A pre-application is required by January 7, 2025, and the application deadline is February 27, 2025.
The total available funding is $6,000,000 for 6-9 awards ranging from $200,000 to $975,000 per award over a 3-year period. The research must use ARM-supported observations as an integral component, though complementary data from other sources may be used. The program falls under the DOE Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049), and the research is intended to benefit the public by increasing understanding of the Earth system.
Synopsis
The DOE SC program in Biological and Environmental Research (BER) hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for Atmospheric System Research (ASR) within BER's Earth and Environmental Systems Sciences Division (EESSD). ASR supports research on key cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiative transfer processes that affect the Earth's radiative balance and hydrological cycle, especially processes that limit the predictive ability of regional and global models. This NOFO solicits research grant applications for observational, data analysis, and/or modeling studies that use BER-supported Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility observations to improve understanding and model representation of: 1) Atmospheric processes from ARM's Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) and 2) High latitude and Southern Ocean atmospheric processes using ARM observations. All research supported by awards under this NOFO is intended to benefit the public through increasing our understanding of the Earth system.
