About this opportunity
The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science Nuclear Physics (NP) program is seeking applications for research and development (R&D) projects that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to address challenges in nuclear science and technology. The key focus areas include autonomous optimization and control of accelerators and detectors, as well as applying AI/ML to advance nuclear physics computations. The program will provide up to $22 million in funding for 10-15 awards ranging from $200,000 to $3.5 million each over a two-year period. Letters of Intent are required by November 14, 2024, with full applications due January 14, 2025. All domestic applicants except 501(c)(4) nonprofits are eligible, and DOE National Laboratories may apply as prime applicants or subrecipients.
The funding opportunity is being issued under the DOE Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049), which supports fundamental scientific research across multiple disciplines. Awards are expected to be made in fiscal year 2025, with selections anticipated by June 2025. The program aims to expand scientific understanding through hypothesis-driven research, innovative technologies, and collaborative interdisciplinary approaches that can potentially transform technological capabilities in nuclear physics.
Synopsis
The DOE SC program in Nuclear Physics (NP) hereby announces its interest in receiving applications for research and development (R & D) efforts directed at artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for autonomous optimization and control of accelerators and detectors of relevance to current or next generation NP accelerator facilities and scientific instrumentation, as well as applications applying AI/ML to advance nuclear physics computations
