About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is inviting investigators at U.S. organizations to submit proposals for the Arctic Research Opportunities grant. The goal is to advance fundamental, process, and systems-level understanding of the rapidly changing Arctic environment, social, and cultural systems, and to improve the capacity to project future change. The scientific scope aligns with the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee's five-year plans. The Arctic Sciences Section coordinates with programs across NSF and other federal and international partners to co-review and co-fund Arctic proposals as appropriate. Proposals must be submitted by the posted deadline, and will be evaluated based on the stated criteria.

The Arctic Research Opportunities grant provides funding for research focused on the Arctic region and its connectivity with lower latitudes. While specific award values are not provided, the Federal Grant Program under which this opportunity is assigned, the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050), has recently awarded grants ranging from $79,139 to $4,893,936, typically spanning 1-5 year project periods. The work is predominantly performed at academic facilities, field sites, scientific observatories, and research vessels across the United States, with opportunities for interdisciplinary and international collaboration.

Synopsis

The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites investigators at U.S. organizations to submit proposals to the Arctic Sciences Section, Office of Polar Programs (OPP) to conduct research about the Arctic region. The goal of this solicitation is to attract research proposals that advance a fundamental, process, and systems-level understanding of the Arctic's rapidly changing natural environment and social and cultural systems, and, where appropriate, to improve our capacity to project future change. The Arctic Sciences Section supports research focused on the Arctic region and its connectivity with lower latitudes. The scientific scope is aligned with, but not limited to, research challenges outlined in the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (https://www.nsf.gov/geo/opp/arctic/iarpc/start.jsp) five-year plans. The Arctic Sciences Section coordinates with programs across NSF and with other federal and international partners to co-review and co-fund Arctic proposals as appropriate. The Arctic Sciences Section also maintains Arctic logistical infrastructure and field support capabilities that are available to enable research.
