About this opportunity
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is offering the Archaeological and Ethnographic Field Research grant program to fund empirical research projects in the United States or abroad that answer significant humanities questions using archaeological and/or ethnographic methods. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, accredited higher education institutions, state/local governments, and federally recognized tribal governments. The program supports field-related costs such as travel, accommodation, field staff, equipment, and salary replacement. There are two application deadlines - September 25, 2024 and September 24, 2025 - with optional draft deadlines of July 15, 2024 and June 16, 2025 respectively. Approximately $800,000 in total funding is available per deadline to fund about 6 awards.
Applicants may request up to $150,000 in outright and/or federal matching funds for projects lasting 4-36 months. Projects selected under the 2024 deadline must start between June 1, 2025 and May 1, 2026, while 2025 deadline projects must start between June 1, 2026 and May 1, 2027.
