About this opportunity
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture is seeking applications to support education, applied research, and community development programs at Alaska Native-serving and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions. Eligible applicants must be individual institutions or collaborative arrangements of two or more institutions that meet enrollment thresholds (minimum 20 percent Alaska Native enrollment or 10 percent Native Hawaiian enrollment) and must demonstrate institutional commitment through required documentation including eligibility certification letters, data management plans, mentoring plans, and evaluation plans. Projects must address educational needs within food, agricultural, natural resources, and human sciences (FANH), with priority given to initiatives developing leadership skills, integrating social and behavioral sciences, and supporting curricula design, faculty enhancement, instructional delivery systems, scientific instrumentation, student experiential learning, and recruitment/retention programs. Applications will be evaluated through a peer and merit review process conducted by qualified scientists and subject matter experts, with reviewers assessing scientific merit, relevance to program goals, and institutional capacity. The application deadline is June 16, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov.
Approximately $9,577,000 in total funding is available for fiscal year 2026, with individual Standard Grants ranging from $150,000 to $500,000 and Collaboration Grants ranging from $550,000 to $1,500,000, with an anticipated 10 awards. Projects will have a duration of 36 to 48 months, and applicants must comply with a federal indirect cost limitation of 30 percent of total federal funds awarded. Performance of work will occur at eligible Alaska Native-serving and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions throughout Alaska and Hawaii.
