About this opportunity
This notice of intent (NOI) announces the upcoming release of Funding Opportunity Announcement No. DE-FOA-0002956 from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). The intended FOA will support the development of advanced technologies to secure a domestic supply of critical minerals and materials (CMM) through four Areas of Interest: (1) coproduction of CMM and carbon manufacturing precursor materials from unconventional coal and other carbon-based feedstocks, (2) recovery of heavy rare earth elements from secondary and unconventional resources, (3) critical mineral recovery from produced water, and (4) process diversification for producing rare earth elements from secondary/unconventional resources and recycled materials. Applications are not being accepted at this time, and DOE is not seeking comments on the information provided in the NOI.
The intended FOA will be funded through the DOE's Fossil Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.089). Recent federal grant awards under this program have ranged from approximately $250,000 to over $100 million, with project periods typically between 1-5 years. Projects are expected to be performed at locations across the United States, including disadvantaged communities, research laboratories, and industrial sites.
