About this opportunity

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit R01 applications examining the efficacy and clinical effectiveness of multimodality digital health technology approaches to remote management of type 2 diabetes, with an application due date of October 6, 2026. This is a forecast only; applications are not currently being solicited. The funding opportunity will operate under CFDA 93.847 (Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research).

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, other nonprofit entities, and special district governments. Faith-based and community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories are eligible. Non-domestic entities and foreign components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.

Digital health technology under this NOFO includes continuous glucose monitoring, telemedicine with virtual coaching, connected digital devices (smartwatches, activity monitors, digital scales), mobile health applications for monitoring dietary intake, medication adherence, mood and behavior, and methods facilitating bidirectional information exchange with health care teams including directed text messaging and patient portals. Applications utilizing peer support mechanisms to improve diabetes care are eligible.

Award amounts and the expected number of awards are not specified in this forecast announcement. Projects typically span one to five years. The R01 Clinical Trial Required activity code requires applicant collaboration to develop meaningful partnerships addressing multimodality digital health interventions where evidence-based foundations currently are lacking.
