About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for research advancing healthcare for older adults from populations experiencing health disparities, with applications due January 7, 2028. This R01 Clinical Trial Optional mechanism funds multi-level healthcare research designed to understand appropriate screening, diagnostic, and clinical care guidelines in primary care settings; explore shared decision-making between clinicians, care teams, older adults, and caregivers; and identify effective care coordination strategies.
Eligible applicants include county and city governments, state governments, tribal governments and organizations, school districts, special district governments, public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, public or Indian housing authorities, and other organizational types. The announcement also specifies eligibility for Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, and regional organizations. Non-U.S. entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are not eligible.
The opportunity is funded under four NIH parent programs: Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (CFDA 93.393), Nursing Research (CFDA 93.361), Minority Health and Health Disparities Research (CFDA 93.307), and Aging Research (CFDA 93.866). Applications will be evaluated on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, alignment with NIH priorities, competency of the investigative team, adequacy of facilities and resources, and budget justification. All applications receive dual scientific peer review followed by national advisory council review. Applicants should consult the attached application guide (PKG00288365.pdf) for research-specific submission instructions and forms requirements.
