About this opportunity
The Administration for Community Living's National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is seeking applications from institutions of higher education to establish an Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training (ARRT) program focused on enhancing research capacity in community living and participation outcomes for people with disabilities. Eligible applicants must recruit and train individuals holding research doctorates or advanced degrees, provide comprehensive didactic instruction emphasizing scientific methodology, offer research experience with qualified researchers and practicum activities with disability organizations, and deliver academic and career mentorship with opportunities for professional presentations and publications. The program requires targeted recruitment of individuals with disabilities and training that spans at least 12 months with trainees devoting at least 80 percent of their time to training activities. Applications will be evaluated on five criteria: importance of the problem (15 points), design of training activities (50 points), plan of operation (10 points), project staff quality (15 points), and adequacy and accessibility of resources (10 points). The Letter of Intent is due March 17, 2026, with applications due April 13, 2026, and an informational conference call scheduled for February 25, 2026.
The federal government will award one grant of $250,000 per budget period (with a floor of $245,000) over a 36-month project period consisting of three 12-month budget periods, with an anticipated project start date of June 1, 2026. An indirect cost rate of 8 percent is capped for this training award, excluding tuition, stipends, and fees, and no cost sharing or matching is required, though voluntary non-federal contributions are permitted. Work will be performed at the recipient institution of higher education in collaboration with disability organizations and service providers to develop the training infrastructure and recruit qualified candidates.
