About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for research grants to increase access to evidence-based youth mental health interventions and services, with an application deadline of January 7, 2027. This R01 Clinical Trial Optional opportunity is open to a broad range of applicants including higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), for-profit entities, school districts, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Non-domestic entities and non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are ineligible.

Proposed research must address methods to expand access to evidence-based interventions for youth experiencing mental health challenges, with emphasis on underserved populations in rural areas, inner cities, and those experiencing housing and food insecurity or homelessness. Priority research areas include optimizing assessment and intervention strategies; addressing workforce shortages and treatment wait lists; integrating interventions into settings where youth are identified as needing care (schools, social services, pediatric medicine, justice); and reducing systemic barriers to access and quality of care related to structure, policy, organization, cost, financing, and management.

Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit by peer review panels and the National Advisory Mental Health Council, with consideration given to program relevance and program balance. Award decisions also weigh availability of funds and relevance to program priorities.

This opportunity is funded under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242), administered by the National Institute of Mental Health. Project periods are not to exceed five years and may be renewed as competing requests.

Synopsis

This NOFO is a call to action in response to the mental health crisis in the United States. We seek applications that will study methods to increase access to evidence-based interventions and services for youth mental health, including those living in rural areas, inner cities, and other under-resourced areas, and youth experiencing housing and food insecurities and out-right homelessness. Applications should address research related to optimizing assessment, intervention and service strategies, overcoming challenges related to the workforce shortage, wait lists for treatment, integration of treatment and preventive interventions into settings where people are most likely to be best identified as needing care (eg: schools, social service, pediatric medicine and justice), and service interventions that address systemic barriers to access and quality of mental health care (structural, policy, organizational, value (cost/financing), management).
