About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for R01 research grants to translate scientific discoveries and engineering developments into diagnostic and therapeutic methods and tools, with applications due January 7, 2028.

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), for-profit organizations, small businesses, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, and other entities. The opportunity also welcomes applications from HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.

The R01 mechanism supports research in pre-clinical, clinical, and non-clinical settings, domestic or foreign, for conditions and diseases within the missions of participating institutes. Clinical trials are optional. The program aims to deliver new capabilities addressing basic research problems in understanding disease and applied research in assessing risk, detecting, preventing, diagnosing, treating, and managing disease.

Funding falls under two Assistance Listing programs: Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research (CFDA 93.394) and Cancer Treatment Research (CFDA 93.395). Peer review evaluates scientific merit and significance of objectives, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. Grants and cooperative agreements compete on basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health priorities and strategic plans. Initial awards typically fund the first 12-month budget period, with recommended support for the remainder of the project period indicated in the Notice of Grant Award.

Synopsis

Through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to stimulate efforts to translate scientific discoveries and engineering developments into methods or tools that address problems in basic research to understand disease, or in applied research to assess risk, detect, prevent, diagnose, treat, and/or manage disease. The rationale is to deliver new capabilities to meet evolving requirements for technologies and methods relevant to the advance of research and delivery of care in pre-clinical, clinical and non-clinical settings, domestic or foreign, for conditions and diseases within the missions of participating institutes.
