About this opportunity
This federal grant opportunity provides Tribal Transportation Program Safety Funds through the Federal Highway Administration to support eligible transportation safety projects on Tribal lands. Federally recognized Indian Tribes may apply for funding under four categories including safety planning, data assessment, infrastructure improvement, and roadway departure countermeasures. Applications will be accepted from October 1 through January 15, 2024 and evaluated based on alignment with a Tribe's transportation safety plan and data-driven prioritization of needs. Awards will be announced approximately four to five months after the deadline.
The notice specifies annual awards will range from $23 to $25 million to be distributed competitively among highly qualified, qualified, and not qualified applications. Funded projects must be obligated within one year of award and are intended to improve transportation safety on Tribal roads and in Tribal communities. Guidance documents provide templates for applicants to detail project locations, risks, and proposed countermeasures to support competitive proposals.
Synopsis
Eligible projects described in section 148(a)(4) are strategies, activities, and projects on a public road that are consistent with a transportation safety plan and that (i) correct or improve a hazardous road location or feature, or (ii) address a highway safety problem. TTPSF emphasizes the development of strategic transportation safety plans using a data-driven process as a means for Tribes to identify transportation safety needs and determine how those needs will be addressed in Tribal communities. FHWA has identified four eligibility categories: transportation safety plans; data assessment, improvement, and analysis activities; systemic roadway departure countermeasures; and infrastructure improvements and other eligible activities as listed in 23 U.S.C. § 148(a)(4).
