About this opportunity
This notice announces a competitive grant opportunity through the National Marine Fisheries Service's Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program. NMFS seeks applicants to develop new fishing gear and practices to minimize bycatch and protected species interactions in federally managed fisheries. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, non-profits, academic institutions, businesses and individuals. Pre-proposals are due December 15, 2023 with full proposals due March 20, 2024. Projects will be evaluated based on technical merit, budget justification, applicant qualifications, outreach activities, and relevance to program goals. Anticipated start date is September 1, 2024 for projects lasting up to 18 months.
Anticipated funding is $2.3 million to support 10 to 15 cooperative agreement awards ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 each. Projects will fall under the Unallied Science Projects program categorized by developing applied research to directly benefit the fishing industry. Work is expected to be performed domestically to advance the objectives of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
Synopsis
The mission of the National Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program (BREP) is to support the development of technological solutions and changes in fishing practices designed to minimize bycatch of fish and protected species (including Endangered Species Act-listed fish, marine mammals, seabirds, and sea turtles) and to reduce impacts to invertebrates (including sponges, deep-sea corals, and shallow (tropical) corals.) In addition, BREP may support projects that quantify post-release mortality and identify ways to minimize mortality and injury of bycaught species (including post-release injury and mortality). Projects should produce outcomes that can directly influence management needs of federally managed living marine resources. For Fiscal Year 2024, NMFS anticipates that approximately $2,300,000 could be made available for approximately 10-15 projects that address bycatch research as identified in the Program Priority Section (I.B.1 - I.B.5).
